St Andrews

 

Sitting in the shade of a petrol station, using a fat 0.5 fineliner, I dashed off the fiddly bits by the roof and spire.  Sometimes the police spy from the base of the palm trees to spot drivers on their cell phones at the stop lights, and radio ahead to cops waiting further on.  I've sketched them doing this. An effective method that brings in many punters.

This week it is the Taranaki Garden Festival. It runs from the 31st October to the 8th November. During the festival we have a series of sketches on display at St Andrew's Church. We went and sketched at the church about five different times, and tried to capture many different aspects of it inside and out.

There is also a display there by the orchid Society. So last Saturday we went and sketched among the orchids and our sketches.

A row of four palm trees in front of a church, alongside a busy New Plymouth intersection. I had a few people shout from the cars during the red lights that my drawing was starting to come along. If you're one of those in traffic, checking out the finished version here, this one's for you.

1980's Fishers of Men window -with wonderful paua-like blues at top and bottom.  Fishing net on the right, basket of fish on the left. Horizontal metal rods added recently to minimise high wind damage.

St Andrew's Presbyterian Church.

We were back at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church this week.  It's quite a challenge, so worth the effort.

Here is the blurb:

St Andrew's is a traditional English Gothic revival church. The foundation stone was laid by Rev. Professor W.Hewitson on 1 August 1931.The architect was Frederick de Jersey Clere and the builders were Boon Bros. The cost including land,buildings and furnishings was £12,390.
It was opened and dedicated on the 16th of April 1932 by the Rev. Professor W. Hewitson.

The only major alteration has been the modern entrance hall to the north, officially opened in November 1979.

The church is a prominent city landmark on the corner of Courtenay and Liardet Streets. It has been transformed in recent years thanks to a major restoration project.

I got there early and spent quite a bit of time trying to draw the church. I decided on a change and tried colour pencil.

I then tried a quick sketch of the sundial in the garden. It has the inscription, "I Number None But Sunny Hours." We did have a lovely sunny afternoon.

St Andrew's Syndrome

In 2009, St Andrew's was the location of the first ever Taranaki Sketchers sketchcrawl. (This was back when the group was just Scott and Paul!) Due to the misleading and deceptive height of the tower, it was found to be difficult to fit the building to a page without cutting off the top or distorting and shrinking the overall drawing. Since then, if a local sketcher can't fit a subject on a page or squishes the image to contain it, it is said around here that the drawing may be suffering from St Andrew's Syndrome.
I don't believe that I've given the original location a try yet, so when we were invited by the church to draw their home, I was curious to see if I would experience the phenomenon. It turned out that the affliction started to develop! I cured it by constantly turning pages. What you see here is a completed fifth start.
(Fun Fact: That's Maurice and Scott in this sketch, sitting by the traffic lights.)

Washers

I was sitting on the steps of St Andrew's Church in New Plymouth on the corner of Courtenay and Liardet Streets. I was watching the receding busy one-way traffic, the fire fighters in the hall across the street and paying attention to the details of the traffic lights as I sketched. The 'squeegee bandits' were out on the corner as well. These are a group of young people who are making a bit of cash by washing windows at red lights. There is a bit of controversy about this right now. It's in the newspaper occasionally and they may or may not be allowed to continue due to complaints. From what I was observing, they are generally polite with everyone and have no problem if you don't want a wash. Ironically, the only public menace on that corner was the van of teenagers driving around the block over and over again, yelling at them to 'get a life'.

The Third St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in New Plymouth. The original St Andrew’s was built in 1863 and was destroyed by fire in 1884. The present building was erected in 1932.
St Andrew’s has been designed in the style of a traditional English Gothic revival church. Constructed of plastered, reinforced concrete, clad in Waiwhakaiho stone. The roof is slate and the spire sheathed in copper.
