Food Court Lunch

I had some extra time while shopping so I sketched the mall food court. I noticed three things:
1.  It's amazing how little time people take when eating in a food court. People aren't there to chat; it's all business so that makes for some fast sketching. I definitely feel sketching people in a proper cafe is easier.
2.  About 80% of females partaking in a food court lunch had longer hair tied back in a ponytail.
3.  The fast food franchise kiosks with huge advertising budgets get a return on their investment. There was a constant queue for burgers while some of the other places were super quiet. The Chinese food place had one guy just standing there behind a buffet, with no takers. I kept looking over at him and it never changed. (When this one was done though, I went over to Mr. Lonely and bought a plate of sweet and sour pork.)

Sushi Ninja Express

I had some time to kill at the local mall so I went and did a sketch of the sushi restaurant on the top floor. It's the kind that has the plates circulating on conveyors so that you can choose as you are seated. Normally when I'm there (eating, not sketching), I can be a while since I like seeing the selections go by and I just like, you know... eating. The two people in my drawing just came in and started on the first plate in front of them. They had their business faces on, had multiple plates and were gone in 10 under minutes. So I learned that this place is really good if you don't have a lot of time. It was also a reminder that when drawing people, when you start, commit to it! You don't know when anyone can move or leave.

#USkGlobal24hrSketchwalk

Today is the 10 year Anniversary of the Global Urban Sketchers Group! They are doing a sketchwalk to mark and celebrate this. We met at Puke Ariki Landing to sketch. Brian took on the job of photography and uploading to the Urban Sketchers Instagram account. This is good I say, as I know nothing about Instagram.

Here is my sketch of Centre City Shopping Centre:

I did another one in the afternoon as part of my Black and White Picture challenge I've been doing. I decided to try the old Women's Rest Rooms. The building has been painted black, (not sure why), so I figured it qualified.

Centre City on a Rainy Afternoon.

Sketching on Saturday was at Centre City. Some of the cast from the "Sister Act" musical comedy were there doing a Nun Run. Sister Act will be on at TSB showplace from 21st July to 6th August. This was an ideal opportunity to practice some more "Sketching People".

Here is my sketch:
 Pencil and Inktense Pencil.

Once I'd finished this sketch I still had about 1/2 an hour until show and tell. What to do next? The sales were on, why not go shopping? No. I stayed the distance and did another sketch, even though it was sorely tempting.

Watercolour.
