Collecting Seaweed at East End

This one was done in July before lockdown. It was just after a big storm and patches of seaweed were washing up on the beaches. Although I've never collected it myself, it's pretty good in a garden. There's a small window from when it shows up to when it washes back into the sea. At times, there were quite a few harvesters on the beach. While stuck at home, I gave this one this one the colour treatment.

East End

I had the opportunity to sketch off the deck of someone who overlooks the East End beach and reserve. There's still a horse paddock on the other side of the tracks so it seems like we're in the country. If you were to look to the sides, you'd see that it was pretty suburban, but on a day like that, I just kept looking at the water.

Vintage and Classic Cars

Great day out, sketching  cars at an event to raise funds for the Cancer Society. Fast and furious , no detail as such ….and then gave away better ones where owners wanted something to take home !

A Sketch in Spite of the Rain.

It absolutely poured down today, so much so that the centre of town was completely flooded and some of the shops suffered flooding too. It was wisely decided the weather was no good for sketching today, but.....................
At the end of the day the rain all stopped and then the sun came out. Lots of people were taking the chance to get out of the house. I went down to the Foreshore Walkway by East End Beach and did this quick 45 minute sketch.

Luckily it was a quick sketch, because as I finished the rain started spitting again.

Hockey Practice

Here's a quick sketch of inline hockey practice. The local team is called the the Ravens. There aren't any actual ravens in New Zealand, but there can't be many native Penguins in Pittsburgh either. Pretty normal types of drills - passing, skating and taking shots. This scene could be anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere but then they spoil the illusion by opening the large side door and you can see the sea. You can also look across the rink at the row of flags. India, Australia, Taiwan, South Africa and New Zealand - all the hockey 3rd rate hockey nations are represented. But this is how they roll down under and the kids seem to be having fun.

Kite Surfers at East End Beach.

This weekend we went to East End Reserve. It was a very blustery, cold day. Not so good for sketching, but extremely good for kite surfing! I've tried sketching these guys once before with not the best success, so I thought I would try again. I got on much better this time. I even got two sketches done!

Here they are:

I used pen and colour pencil for this one.

And watercolour for this one.

Here are some photos:

Paris Plage at East End Reserve.

The meeting point today was Paris Plage Cafe at East end Reserve. A very pleasant afternoon it was too. A wonderful atmosphere, good music and an afternoon sitting in not the sun, cloud! We had the first rain in weeks although it didn't really last long. Just enough to put a few spots on our sketches!

First I challenged myself to draw people:

Then another quick sketch of the looming clouds:

East End Beach

It was a fantastic blue sky, fine day today for the last day of Autumn. We went to East End Beach and sat in the sun and sketched.

I decided to try these paddle boarders and to see if I could get the sun on the water.

East End Beach on a Sunny but Windy Day.

Yesterday we went to East End Beach. The Pohutukawa Trees all have their flowers out. Pohutukawa are a native New Zealand tree and we call it "The New Zealand Christmas Tree." They always flower at Christmas time.

Here is the view looking back towards Port Taranaki.

Because of the high winds, the kite surfers were all out in force. This one was putting on a display for us!
