The Breakfast Club

Winter sketching means coffee shop sketching. If it's rainy I'll have a drink someplace dry before work. One wet week, I went to Joe's Garage pretty much everyday. There's a bunch of very regulars who meet up there and chat before work. It's always a varied selection of the usual group of people. Each day I drew a different person. As a result, some of the very regular Joe's didn't make the cut while one guy made it into the drawing two times.
I also included a colorised version of an older sketch from the same place.

Walk to Work Wednesdays

In August, New Plymouth organised a promotion to get people to walk, cycle or take the bus to work during this winter month. You could apply for a card from several cafes, and, each of the five Wednesdays, get a coffee for a dollar. Since I bike to work pretty much every day, I signed up and figured I'd just carry on cycling... but then, I hurt my back. It took a few days just to stand up so I wasn't doing anything for quite a while. The irony is that during this campaign to get people out of their cars, I've haven't driven to work more all year.
I'm on the mend now as long as I take it easy. I caught the last two Wednesdays and came away with this sketch of the inside of a cafe called Joe's Garage.

JOE'S GARAGE. New Plymouth.  The old State Hotel as I knew it before it was later known under various names as a bar and restaurant. An old wooden building in the grand style nicely renovated inside.

Joe's Garage.

Today we went to Joe's Garage on the corner of Devon Street East and Gover Street. Joe's Garage is in the renovated and restored State Hotel. The building is 147 years old, and a lot of the old features have been maintained and exposed to keep the character of the building. Past owners also donated old memorabilia.

Karyn Grant the current director has said:
"It's really lovely seeing this building coming back to life and rejuvenated because it really is a landmark."

Just a quick one today as I arrived late.
